Katalyst x CONTRA Paddington Hat

$150.00 15000

As much we'd love to take the credit for the hat you see before you, it's really the talents of Kate Evans that made this idea a reality. Whilst she normally channels her artistic vision through her own label Katalyst, it's Kate's technical knowledge & expertise that means you're not looking at some pieces of fabric sticky-taped into a vaguely hat-like shape.

Each hat is constructed of just 6 panels for the crown/brim + 2 for the underside. The real joy is that the minimalism allows for more complex construction techniques than you'd normally see on such a simple item.

The name comes from attempts to describe the look. The soft curves can be worn straight, but when the brim's flipped up to reveal the selvedge detail below the fit reminds us of the red hat donned by childhood icon & lover of marmalade; Paddington Bear. Side note but did you know his "real" name was Pastuso?

The fabric itself is a classic mid-weight Japanese selvedge denim. Obviously the fabric isn't just any selvedge denim; it's Marc Jacobs daaarling. More specifically it's deadstock fabric from some previous season that the designer clearly had no use for. Lucky us then!

The details revealing the fabric's self-edge aren't essential to the construction, but we think it looks really cool; it seems a shame to hide something so beautiful beneath a seam. The natural indigo dyed cotton also means this is going to age just like your favourite jeans, something particularly exciting for those of us who like to beat the hell out of clothes.

Materials are a limiting factor for production, we only managed to source enough denim to make 6 hats initially, we have since sourced more & produced an extra 10. Each is individually numbered.

  • 6 Panel, darted crown
  • Exposed selvedge detail
  • Lined brim with exposed selvedge cutout
  • Traditional gold denim stitching throughout
  • Custom co-branded tag (printed in Brisbane)
  • Individually numbered edition of 16
  • Constructed from deadstock Japanese selvedge denim
  • Designed & made in Australia by Kate Evans of Katalyst

Approx sizing: Medium (same as previous Small) = 58cm | Large = 61cm
